Appreciate the review of Pennterra, especially so since there are no spoilers. You didn't mention to your readers about the availability of the book, so I'll take this opportunity to state that Pennterra by Judith Moffett was reprinted by Fantastic Books in mid-2009 in a trade paperback edition, and is available online, or the book can be ordered at your local bookstore.
